Playing The Right Tune

Expansion packs aren’t unusual with games: specifically, music ones. The popular Singstar karaoke series is a good example of this, with everything from Bollywood to Pop Hits. The Guitar Hero series dabbled in this territory with “Rocks the 80s”, however the much rumoured and recently announced Aerosmith version might be a step in the wong direction.
There’s little doubt that releasing more songs is a good thing: but 60 new songs a year shouldn’t be the only source of new tracks to play.
So, why isn’t the Singstar model of releases appropriate for Guitar Hero? Because Singstar was built for it, and has since moved on with technology.

Singstar on PS2 was developed in a way that took future releases in to account. The game engine was perfected first go, and it had a very handy disc-switching mechanic, in that would could swap the disc whilst on the main menu without rebooting the system.
Sure, it’s a minor feature, but it shows the intent for the series to be released in primarily genre-based installments. However, Guitar Hero is fluctuating between full releases and these expansion editions: and the series could be heavily improved by focussing on one or the other.
